Boy, 10, Seriously Injured when Van Crashes

A 10-year-old boy suffered serious injury in a car accident, when the crowded minivan he was traveling in, with 10 other people, blew a tire and spun into a guardrail.

The 2002 Chrysler Town & Country minivan transporting eleven children and adults, required more than 12 ambulances and fire trucks to show up on the scene of the accident.

The accident left the vehicle resting in the emergency lane. However, it caused both directions of traffic to be held up for over 45 minutes as a medical helicopter landed to pick up the 10-year-old boy.

A family member said the boy was knocked unconscious during the crash. He was airlifted to Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Seven other occupants of the minivan were transported to the hospital by ambulance after suffering minor injuries. Three of the occupants refused treatment.

According to one of the occupants, they were on their way from Jacksonville to Tampa when they blew a tire and lost control of the vehicle. The crash totaled the van and left debris strewn across the highway.
