Boot camps for juvenile offenders are intended to provide a strict regime that leads to a better life. The Miami Herald reports on a camp session that got tragically out of hand.
Guards seen beating teen in videoA 14-year-old boy was ''brutally'' beaten by guards and ''flung around like a rag doll'' at a boot camp for juvenile delinquents in Panama City hours before he died at a Panhandle hospital, according to two lawmakers who on Wednesday saw a videotape of the incident. The video, which recorded the last 20 to 30 minutes of the teen's stay at the Bay County Sheriff's Office Boot Camp, shows officers at times kicking, punching and choking Martin Lee Anderson after he refused, or was unable, to comply with officers' orders to run or do other exercises, the legislators said.Martin, of Panama City, died Jan. 6 at Pensacola's Sacred Heart Hospital, hours after he was admitted to the boot camp, which is operated under a contract with the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice.Clearly shaken, state Rep. Gus Barreiro told The Miami Herald that the tape depicted ''the most heinous treatment of a human being'' he had ever seen. "It was obvious to me the kid was unconscious, and they were still abusing him. People will be outraged when they see this tape, and they should be outraged."''This could be anybody's son,'' added Barreiro, a Miami Beach Republican who chairs the House Juvenile Justice Appropriations Committee, and has headed a separate committee investigating alleged abuses in DJJ facilities.

I was in a teen challenge boot camp for 11 months. Every single day i was beaten like this.I only got out after numerous attempts at suicide and had to receive medical attention in bay county. Im glad to see that these things are finally being heard by the public. Martin took one for the team. Hopefully this incident will bring justice to all of us who were and still are in similar facilities. Id love to see footage of these drill instructors in their first few ours in prison. Jeb Johnsonboycott all teen challenge car washes all the way fom Bay county to Holmes county, Bonifay, Florida area, or you will be supporting adolescent torture.
As a Certified Emergency Nurse I was (and still am) appalled at how the nurse seen in the video simply stood by as teenager Anderson was beaten. At times she can be seen chatting with officers, her back to the horrific ongoing beating. I wish I could say I am surprised by the M.E. listing the cause of death as "sickle cell trait". Manipulating "causation" is far too common amongst Coroners. Chances are the autopsy clearly describes hemorrhagic injury caused by blunt trauma and not sickle cell. The truth is sickle cell trait does not mean one has sickle cell anemia/disease. Chances are this child did not have full blown sickle cell disease, or he would have had an episode of severe bleeding in his past (or at least evidence of sickle cell crisis). Regardless, the child would not have bleed to death by just sitting in a chair all day long, or any other usual activity- what caused him to bleed to death was blunt trauma from being beaten PERIOD. We would not say it was the sickle cell to blame and not the assailant if the child had been stabbed and died from bleeding from a lacerated liver, now would we??? If the nurse knew or had reason to know he had sickle cell trait then that is even more reason she was negligent in her duties to protect that child from further harm. I personally am reporting her to the Nursing Board in Florida. I urge all nurses to take a stand against this injustice and also file a complaint. It is my hope that the truth in regard to how cause of death statements are manipulated receives some news coverage. This coroner needs to be held to professional account.
I am in complete agreement with the earlier entry by the RN. I too am have been a Nursing Professional for over two decades. And I am appalled by the complete disregard for the life welfare of the child shown by the so-called nurse. As far as I am concerned, her behavior amounted to criminal negligence resulting in the death of someone in her care. She should be stripped of her license and made subject to the same criminal liabilities as the so-called "guards" that participated in the murder of that obviously helpless, defenseless young man. No child should ever be subjected to the kind of brutality that that young man experienced. Govenor Jeb Bush should also be held accountable for his inaction in this matter. As I understand it, from the news reports, he has not even taken the time to look at the videos and he has said that he believes that Boot Camps serve a useful purpose. He is just as accoutable for the welfare of the citizens of Florida as President Bush is for the citizens of the United States. If a child in his state has been brutally murdered and his position is that the institution in which the child was murdered serves a useful purpose then he should be put out of office for deriliction of duty. I'll bet that if the child that was murdered was one of his children he would have intervened immediately. I'm certain that he would have put all of his authority and power into an effort to shut down the so-called camp and seen to it that every one responsible was held accountable.
I pray to GOD that those of you in Tampa don't drop the ball on this one, and allow time to erase it from your memory. This was one of the most Horrific things I have ever seen. A fourteen year old BOY! This could be any of our sons. Don't drop the ball. Prosecute all, ALL involved, ESPECIALLY Nurse Hatchet!
I have never bbeen motivated like this to write letters and demand justice.... That is just what I did... I dontknow how I can help prosecute those freaks that murderd this poor CHILD- and the LYING evil MEDICAL EXAMINER and Jeb Bush-- and the Sherrif - the nurse etc.... I sent e-mails to: THE SHERIFF at rsasser@bayso.org ---And State Rep. Gus Barreiro, a Miami Beach Republican whose first viewing of the tape last week added fire to the controversy, said upon seeing it again Friday that the tape still makes him scream at his television screen.``I keep yelling, `Stop! Don't punch him anymore. He's not moving.''' I THANKED HIM-- his e-mail is gus@gusbarreiro.com ----I e-mailed the EVIL < LYING medical examiner at invforehandmeo@knology.net and told him what I think of him..I e-mailed the US dept of Justice at askdoj@usdoj.govI would like to know how to follow what happens to these people and if there is anything we can do to help make these bootcamps change big time and make those murderers & the Medical examiner & nurse go to prison and get the crap beat out of them....This made me SICK to watch and I hope we continue to see coverage on the news for a long , long time on this one....
How can we be sure that these people involved are brought to justice and the boy is not forgotten & that medical examiner & nurse are stripped of thier liscences and jailed alongside the evil guards... who regulates all the bootcamps-- I want to see updates on the news weekly on this---IT IS SICKENING.. the sheriff, medical examiner etc..... why?
County medical examiner Dr. Charles Siebert - An ME who doesn't take his job too seriously! Goggle him for a chuckle? Doing autopsies so fast he mistakes dead women for men? Pocketing the entire office budget rather than hire assistants? No time to keep his medical credentials up to date? No worries.. He was appointed for life by Gov. Brother Bush. This bumbling good ole boy comes to the "rescue" of another fine specimen of American manhood, Sheriff Frank McKeith, claiming a 14 year old boy who was beaten to death on video at on of the Sheriff?s youth camps died of sickle cell. Why not old age?Makes one wonder if the ME & Sheriff are old friends. Or does white trash just naturally stick together.Maybe we can send them all out hunting with VP Cheney. Whoever comes back alive can claim the other 2 died at birth.
Let's not forget why all these brats are where they are! I am SICK AND TIRED of thugs and criminals screaming for justice! I wish I could see the 14-year-old's record & find out why he was sentenced to boot camp in the first place. I'm certain he got what he deserved! Way to go kharma!
I caution any parent who sends their troubled teen to Bonifay Teen Challenge, this ranch has a history of physically abusing noncompliant teens.
