Fellow InjuryBoard blogger, Paul Kiesel from Los Angeles, posts a timely reminder about the dangers of backyard pools.

Child Drowns in Swimming Pool

As summer winds down, many people are having those last backyard picnics and pool parties. Tragedy struck in Orange County this weekend when a five year old drowned in a backyard pool. Children can drown within a few minutes, so it's always important to keep a close watch on kids in pools.

Many cities have regulations or ordinances requiring fences around backyard pools. It's also common for homeowner's insurance policies to cover accidental drowning deaths in pools. If you have a swimming pool, first, you should make sure it's safe for kids, and, second, that there is always an adult watching out for the children's safety. You should also speak to your insurance agent about making sure you're covered for such events.

A 5-year-old girl drowned during a backyard swimming pool party, the Orange County Fire Authority said Sunday.

Firefighters could not revive Erin Choe of Fullerton, who had been swimming about 7 p.m. Saturday at a home in the 4200 block of Hidden Oaks Drive, authorities said.

If you know someone who was injured in a backyard accident, talking to a lawyer soon after the accident is very important. There might be a right to recover for such tragedies.
