A comment on Cardiac Death At Gym Without Defibrillator

In response to the statement, "Having a defibrillator is all well and good, but these things are not toys. I'm medically trained, but don't know how to use one. They can kill a person as easily as save a life if not properly used."

Before making the assertion that AEDs can be just as harmful as they can be helpful, you might want to consider doing a little research on Automated External Defibrillators and the survival rates of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. SCA has been estimated to take between 250,000 to 350,000 lives per year due to lack of preparedness and delayed response. The current national survival rate for SCA is LESS THAN FIVE PERCENT. The average response rate of EMS is ten minutes, yet if action is not taken within the first few minutes of SCA onset, THE VICTIM WILL DIE.

With the implementation of an AED in public buildings, service vehicles, private businesses, and other locations, a person who experiences SCA has an increased rate of survival by up to ninety percent. AEDs are designed for use by the layperson, giving a step-by-step set of commands for both AED attachment and CPR administration. And, most importantly, the AED WILL NOT SHOCK A VICTIM UNLESS IT DETECTS VENTRICULLAR FIBRILLATION. I challenge you to try and find a situation where an AED has misfired and taken a life rather than saved one. Or browse the numerous personal accounts of SCA survivors, who can attribute the fact that they are here today to the accessibility of an AED during the time of their episode... <a href="<a href="More ... " rel="nofollow">More ... "><a href="More ... " rel="nofollow">More ...

The Philips HeartStart FRx Defibrillator is currently one of the most versatile, effective, and easy to use devices on the market.
A comment on Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed Against Tampa Police

The events of that day is 2005 are unfortunate for all parties involved. The man who lost his life, the family of that man and the officers who have to live with the effects of having taken someone's life. We will never know what really happened that day, it seems like there are always two sides to ever story. No matter what though, this whole situation is sad.

Michael Przybycin
Dennis Hernandez & Associates, PA

A comment on Cardiac Death At Gym Without Defibrillator

As a Firefighter/Paramedic and a CPR instructor (as well as several other EMS releated courses) I find the apathy expressed by Owners/Operators of Hotels, Healthclubs and other businesses both short sighted and ignorant. The operators of the LA Fitness club could have spent under 2000 dollars to provide both the Automatic Defibrillator and training for the ENTIRE staff. Instead they opted to play the odds that they would never have the need for one. In my opinion they got far less than they deserved. 600,000 dollars is a pittance compared to the loss of a father and husband. J.C.

A comment on Message To Employers - Don't Allow Drunks To Drive Company Trucks

Regina,

Your family's pursuit of punitive damages in your Wrongful Death Claim will likely cause other employers to be much more aware of alcohol and drug use by their workers. It is virtually certain that some good will come out of this very tragic situation.

A comment on Riptide Drownings At City Beach

This definitely applies to the Treasure Island Beaches. Metered parking, lounge chair and umbrella rentals, concession stand. No lifeguards whatsoever. I got stuck in a nasty riptide in May and barely made it out alive. Afterwards, there was not even anyone to whom to report this. "Swim at your own risk," indeed, but that signage is not even posted anywhere on the Treasure Island beaches.
